Scott Bryan, Groundsperson, Woodlands

My year at Woodlands has been very challenging, but none the less, a year I have relished. I have carried out many essential jobs this year including linear aeration, deep tine aeration, disc seeding the outfields with dwarf ryegrass, verti-cutting and a full renovation of the cricket square.

Looking after Woodlands is not just about jumping on a mower and cutting the grass. It's as much about turf nutrition than just being able to use a mower.

Knowing about when and what fertiliser to use, aeration, microbial activity, turf tonics, grass seeds and carrying capacity of the pitches. Understanding soil sciences and plant biology all plays a part towards nurturing the grass, treating it very much like my baby. These pitches are an important resource for the local sporting community, providing a high quality playing surface, and are regularly used by over 3,000 players each year.

At Woodlands we are encouraging wildlife to thrive, we have created wildflower habitats, bug hotels and reduced our environmental impact by replacing chemical use with organic alternatives and purchasing a new environmentally friendly electric mower, thanks to funding from the Mick George Community Fund.

The constant battle with the weather has been a big challenge, we seem to be able to see four seasons in one day. For all of us, this year has been a challenge with the pandemic, and it has had a huge impact on sport. With many sports completely stopping, or having new protocols in place to make it safe.

Sport will return when safe to do so and we can't wait to welcome back cricket and football to Woodlands! Until then, stay safe.
