The range of habitats at Ferry Meadows provide excellent opportunities for more detailed study.

We can offer a range of activities to assist teachers in fulfilling the requirements for field work opportunities in Key Stage 3, 4 and Post-16 science and geography, including:

A-Level Biology - using sampling techniques in fieldwork

Based at our Rural Estate hub near the village of Castor, we’ll make use of the range of agricultural and natural habitats within easy walking distance to offer a range of options for practical fieldwork investigations.

Designed to meet the requirements for the assessed core practicals of all the major exam boards and specifications, investigation options include:

  • the distribution and abundance of plants
  • the influence of environmental factors on plant species diversity
  • the influence of biotic and abiotic factors into plant morphology
  • the impact of a variety of biotic and abiotic factors on invertebrate diversity and abundance

Our team will work with teachers to tailor a practical investigation to meet the requirements of your exam board, with a focus on species that will be easily observable at the time of your visit.

Key Stage 3 and 4 Geography - River Landforms

Based at our Rural Estate hub near the village of Castor, we’ll make use of the features observable within easy walking distance along the valley of the River Nene to
offer an investigation into River landscapes and processes.

Students will study features of the River Nene to answer the question “Is this a river in it’s upper, middle or lower course?” Landforms seen will include:

  • Flood plain
  • Levee
  • Meander
  • Oxbow lake
  • River cliff

Students will also have an opportunity to carryout fieldwork to calculate the flow of the river, as well as practicing geographical skills, including interpreting maps and field sketching.
