Come to the Park this Sunday 7th May for something a bit different... The British Canoeing Marathon Racing Committee is hosting the National Short Course Marathon Championships 2023 on Gunwade Lake in Ferry Meadows.

The National Short Course Marathon Championships is an action-packed day of racing with athletes competing over a 3.6km course to claim the national title. Athletes will compete within a heat in the morning to qualify for the final in the afternoon. It is an incredibly exciting competition with some of the British Canoeing international team and even international medalists competing within the different categories.

Marathon canoeing is a fun, but challenging, endurance sport that offers dynamic, fast paced tactical racing that is engaging to watch. The National Short Course Marathon Championships is returning to Nene Park for a second year in a row after its inaugural event took place there last year. The race distance consists of a 3.6km course over two laps with two portages. Portages involve paddlers getting out their boats and running with them, before placing back in the water and continuing.

On race day, paddlers will compete in heats to earn a place in the A final so they can try and claim National Champion status. Within the fields will be international medallists and team members from the 2022 World Championships, European Championships and World Games.

Please note, that due to the canoe marathon, Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity Centre will be closed for the day on 7th May.
