We all know that time spent outdoors is good for us, and here at Nene Park Trust we believe that almost any part of the curriculum can be taught outdoors. However, we also know that many teachers, particularly those working in secondary education, struggle to know how to take their lessons outside. This March, we are delighted to be working with Forest Education Network England (FENE) and Cambium Sustainable to offer funded training in Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning, to  help develop these essential skills in our region.

The level 2 award in Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning is intended to help teachers develop skills and confidence in using school grounds or local outdoor spaces for engaging and exciting curriculum delivery. Delivery of the qualification is through a “blended” approach, with learners working through online resources in their own time, before attending a face to face training day led by an experienced outdoor learning trainer. During the course, participants will learn how to plan and risk assess for outdoor learning as well as developing a useful “tool box” of outdoor learning activities that can be adapted for use in all subject areas and for students working at a variety of different abilities.

Teachers would usually expect to pay £350 to complete this qualification, but thanks to funding from the Forestry Commission, Nene Park Trust are able to offer a limited number of places at a much reduced rate of just £50.

This funding is aimed at teachers working with learners aged 11-16. Booking is open to all teachers and education professionals, however there are just a small number of places available, and bookings are limited to one place per school.

The face to face training day will take place at Ferry Meadows on Thursday 28 March.  Bookings are open now through the Royal Forestry Society website. We expect demand to be high, so please book early to secure your place.

For those who are unable to attend the training day, or are not eligible for a funded place, we plan on running an additional course later in the year. Please email [email protected] for more details.
