Vicky Chambers, Senior Education and Activities Officer

Here at Nene Park we cover a range of areas of the curriculum in our different educational activities, whether that’s through our environmental education programme or our outdoor adventurous activities. It's probably easy to imagine how we incorporate subjects like science, geography and history with the great outdoor spaces that we have, but there is so much more that can be taken outside with learning.

Many of our sessions have been designed to include elements of English, maths, design and technology, science, art, history, geography and physical education, with STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) becoming an increasingly important part of our education offer.

There has been a huge focus on STEM in recent years, highlighting the importance of these subjects, and the role they play in giving young people the knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions.

We have plenty of opportunities for students to engage with STEM education in our activities from Key Stage 1 and upwards. Many of our environmental education sessions include science, whether that’s examining a variety of living things and their habitats, or using different materials and equipment, but have you thought about how we might incorporate science into our outdoor adventurous activities? You can see forces at work in mountain biking, the use of friction in pioneering and the properties of different materials in bushcraft to name just a few.

There are also many ways we can take elements of design and technology outside with us. Students can design their own pirate ships, make Roman onagers, build innovative shelters and try to create their very own raft. Then there’s maths. Maths may not always seem like the most natural subject to take outside, but whether that’s looking at numbers, measurements or statistics, we have activities that incorporate elements of those topics too.
