November 2025 Wildlife Update
Conservation Officer Sophie gives us a run down on the wildlife spotted in the Park during November.
Avian highlights
- Yellow Browed Warbler – was around between Overton & Lynch Lakes at the beginning of the month
- Bullfinch – one of my favourites, the colour of the males especially is stunning (see picture right)
- Whooper Swan – we had a few groups pass over Ferry Meadows & Thorpe Meadows, but the first ones actually dropped in on the 21st November
- Peregrine – was seen around a couple of days at the end of the month
- Teal – really good numbers of Teal on Ham Mere, can be viewed from the newly repaired Teal Hide, or Heron Hide
- Water Rail – can be quite illusive, but one was seen in the ditch between Lynch & Overton Lakes.
- Snipe – at least 40 birds were flushed from Heron Meadow during the Harvest Mouse surveys
- The usual winter visitors such as Wigeon, Common Pochard, Redwing, Pintail, Tufted Ducks, Goldeneyes
Other highlights
- Successful Harvest Mouse surveys (pictured below) found 20 nests across 2 different meadows. These little creatures haven’t been recorded at the park for a number of years, probably due to lack of surveying rather than lack of Harvest Mice, so great to know they’re around. Thanks to ranger Jamie for leading on these surveys, and all the staff and volunteers who came out to help too.
- Roe Deer – a group still around, often seen on Ham Mere
- Butterflies – a Red Admiral and Brimstone were spotted around the park. January and December are the only months I’ve not recorded a butterfly in the park this year, we’ll see what this month brings
