New wildlife habitats on Ham Mere

Contractors have started work this week on habitat improvement work at Ham Mere in Ferry Meadows. The work involves vegetation clearance, the creation of wetland features such as pools and channels, some levelling work on existing banks, and the creation of an additional bank on Teal scrape.

This work will help us to install fencing around the entire perimeter of both Heron scrape and Teal scrape, which will mean we can graze livestock there. This will allow us to manage the Mere much more effectively in future and help us create and maintain a rich mosaic of habitats, increasing biodiversity in the process.

While contractors are on site, please don’t venture onto Ham Mere – but pop along to Heron and Teal bird hides over the coming weeks to see what’s going on. We’re really excited to see how Ham Mere develops over the coming months and years as it attracts new wildlife residents and visitors.

We are able to carry out this important conservation and habitat development work through important funding from both The National Lottery Heritage Fund through the Your Community Greenspace project and the Combined Authority through the Opportunity Fund.
