August Wildlife Update 2025
Some of the wildlife are starting to show subtle signs of winter approaching, there are definitely some signs the birds are starting to move around. But, there are still some summer signs lingering too. Here’s a quick recap of everything spotted in the Park over August.
Bird highlights:
- Spotted Flycatcher – has been in various places around Ferry Meadows for the last week, frequenting the trees near the dog agility course the last few days
- Hobby – spotted over Goldie Meadow
- Little Grebe – although a fairly frequently spotted bird in the Park, a rare breeding record for this month with 3 chicks spotted
- Swift – a few late individuals are still around
- Kingfisher – one has been seen a few times perching on the posts around the fencing edging the new reedbed on Gunwade Lake, as well as the usual sightings along the river
- Masses of House and Sand Martins moving around the park in recent days – signs they’re thinking of migrating!
Other highlights:
- Bats – we’re now up to 11 species (of the 18 in the UK) recorded in Ferry Meadows!
- Grass Snake – along the riverside path of Heron Meadow
- Common Lizard
- Common Toad – a very large individual hopped in front of us at the end of the family bat walk
- Small Copper butterflies have had a great year – a third brood is being seen across the park
