Team Nene cycling to raise funds for our bluebell boardwalk
On 29 July, a team of eight intrepid cyclists made up of staff from Nene Park Trust and Rutland Cycling will take on the challenge of the Prudential Ride London 100. After an early start from the Queen Elizabeth Park in Stratford, Team Nene will cycle 100 miles, along with 80,000 other riders on closed roads through the Surrey countryside, before returning to a hero’s welcome along The Mall.
The riders are taking on this challenge to raise money for Nene Park Trust to help us look after the 1,725 acres of beautiful green space under our care. Specifically, the funds raised from this cycle challenge will go towards construction of a new 750m boardwalk through Bluebell Wood. The new boardwalk will cost around £260,000, most of which is being provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund through the Nenescape Landscape Partnership Scheme but fundraising from our Team Nene cycle challenge will help boost funds and ensure the project can be completed.
The contractors are coming in to construct the substructure of the new boardwalk at the beginning of July. Once that has been completed, our staff and volunteers will use over 30,000 screws to secure the decking boards and hand rails. We hope it will be completed before Easter 2019. Special thanks to our contractors Hugh Pearl (Land Drainage) Ltd, and Gripsure who are providing the anti-slip decking boards.
