Following the Government’s latest announcement on 17 March on the impacts of the Coronavirus we would like to reiterate that the safety and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers and visitors is our top priority.

We are lucky in Peterborough to have such a wonderful green space, open for all to access, and so are pleased that in spite of the restrictions on public gatherings and social interaction, Nene Park will remain open for individuals to walk, cycle, jog, walk their dogs, watch the wildlife and enjoy the arrival of spring.

Getting exercise and fresh air is beneficial for both our physical and mental health and so we encourage Peterborough residents to take advantage of being outside, while still observing the advice on social distancing. The Government advice states you can “go for a walk outdoors if you stay more than 2 metres from others”.

Nene Park Trust was set up to provide Parks, recreation facilities and green space for the benefit of the people of Peterborough (and beyond) and we are keen to fulfil our charitable objectives to enable people and nature to continue to thrive through this difficult time. Over the coming weeks we will do all that we can to maintain the services within the park including our Visitor/information Centre and our Pay and Play water sports and cycle hire activities (for individual use) at Nene Outdoors.  We will however continue to monitor government guidance, which may mean some of these services will need to be reduced further.

Although we are trying to maintain business as usual as far as possible, we have had to take some decisions on wider events and activities in the Park, as follows:

Events

Most public events in the Park have now been cancelled until the end of May. This includes all events delivered by Nene Park Trust and most “hosted” events which are delivered by our partners. Some externally hosted events such as walking or fitness groups may still be going ahead. Please check with the organisers of these events for confirmation.  Anyone who has booked a place on a Nene Park Trust event through our online booking system will receive a refund to the account they used to pay.  Anyone who booked in person in the Visitor Centre should take their proof of purchase to the visitor centre to receive a full refund.  Anyone who had been planning to attend an event delivered by one of our partners is advised to contact the event organiser for further information.

Schools

As schools are now closing from Friday 20 March for the foreseeable future, any school booking already made with us up until the end of May will be cancelled and a full refund will be given. We will be offering daily download activities every weekday while schools are closed, which will be simple activities that parents can do with their children in the Park or at home. These will be available on the website to download or print off. More details to follow.

Private group/corporate activities at Nene Outdoors

Due to limited interaction with the general public we will continue to honour bookings and take new bookings as usual. Our sailing courses are still going ahead. However, if groups decide that they wish to cancel a booking for a visit due to take place before the end of May we will relax our usual cancellation policy and offer a full refund.

Nene Outdoors Pay and Play activities

Pay and Play watersports activities at Nene Outdoors will continue as normal, as it is possible to offer these activities while maintaining a recommended level of “social distance”. Please follow recommended hand washing advice before and after using our equipment. There is plenty of soap and hand sanitiser at Nene Outdoors.

Our volunteers

All group volunteering sessions are suspended across the Park for the time being but we continue to offer lone- working opportunities such as the Volunteer Ranger role. We will also be maintaining regular contact with our volunteers to keep in touch and prevent feelings of isolation.

Visitor Centre

This will remain open for the time being. Please keep an eye on our website and social media for updates on opening times.

Cafes

Our cafes in the Park will continue to remain open although the opening time on weekdays has been changed to 9am.  All other times currently remain the same.  An increased take-away service will be provided to ensure our visitors can continue to enjoy our fantastic food and drink offer in the open-air. For more information on opening hours, please visit Lakeside Kitchen & Bar

Looking forward

Government advice is now being issued on a daily basis.  As a result, the response to Coronavirus within Nene Park is likely to change.  As and when things do change, we will ensure information is posted both on our website and social media pages. We will continue to operate our duty Ranger system to ensure a continued staff presence within the Park.  We would again encourage all our visitors to continue to follow Government guidance and to ensure Nene Park remains safe for all to enjoy.

Coronavirus is going to have a huge impact on many organisations and Nene Park Trust (the charity that cares for Nene Park) is no exception. We expect that over the coming weeks and months the effect on our revenue will be challenging but at the same time we will continue to maintain the Park, operate many of our public services and facilities and of course, care for our visitors and wildlife.

We wish you and your families all the best in this difficult time. Thanks to you all in advance for your ongoing support, cooperation and understanding.
