Now that the first open water swimming season at Nene Park has ended we are pleased to report it has been a great success!

The Nene Park team were excited to introduce a new activity to Gunwade Lake at Ferry Meadows this summer, by hosting its first season of open water swimming. The first session was held on Thursday 6 June and the season ran through to Thursday 3 October, with each weekly session attracting around 20 confident swimmers.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with over 90% of swimmers rating their overall experience as excellent or very good.

The course was a 400m rectangular circuit marked out by four yellow buoys. Swimmers were required to swim in an anticlockwise direction around the course and they could complete the course as many times as they liked within the swim session. The course was patrolled by a safety boat and kayak-based spotter throughout the swim season.

The Nene Park team operated to SH2OUT safety standards, a programme that has been developed as a partnership between British Triathlon and Royal Lifesaving Society to further promote and progress open water swimming and the safety within the sport.

Swimmers were required to wear a NOWCA wristband, allowing them to track their swim and to ensure the operating team could easily see who was on and off the water. Swimmers also benefited from excellent onsite facilities including fully accessible changing rooms and showers.

Plans are already underway for the 2020 season due to start in May, date to be confirmed soon!

The Nene Park team are always looking for new adventure activities to introduce to the Park, so if you have any suggestions please do contact us.
