Activities for Early Years Expand Nene Park Trust can offer a range of educational activities suitable for Early Years groups. Activities last approximately one hour. Choose two activities for a half day visit or three for a full day, including exclusive use of one of our indoor education spaces for your lunch break. Pond dipping What creatures are lurking in the waters of Ferry Meadows? Join our education team to hunt for minibeasts living in the ponds and learn about their strange lifecycles and weird eating habits! Minibeast safari No lions or tigers to be found on this safari but you will be surprised to find how many minibeasts live in the woods of Ferry Meadows! Our education team will take you on a mini safari to track them down and find out about their lives. Sensory games What would it be like to have the ears of a rabbit or the nose of a badger? Children will be encouraged to use all of their senses to explore the world around them in this selection of games and activities. Treasure hunt / orienteering Children can take part in a range of activities designed to increase their confidence in finding their way using maps and directional language. Our education staff will be able to advise on appropriate activities for the age and ability of the participants. Going on a bear hunt Inspired by the popular book, children will need to follow directions to find and name all of the colourful bears scattered around Ferry Meadows. Build a Gruffalo home On his journey through the Deep Dark Wood a mouse learns about the homes of a fox, an owl and a snake but what kind of home would a Gruffalo live in? Children can use their imagination to build a Gruffalo house in this fun team task. Wild art Children are encouraged to let the natural world inspire them to create works of art, sculptures, collages, masks - the possibilities are endless. Farming and Land Use In this half-day course, students will visit the Nene Park Rural Estate to explore different land uses and discover how farming practices can impact on the environment. Pupils will study a section of the river to gain an understanding of the physical and human processes that shaped it and how these influence surrounding wildlife. Plants and their requirements This day course will give pupils the opportunity to observe and identify the different species, parts and requirements of flowering plants, including trees. Activities for Key Stage 3 and above Expand The range of habitats at Ferry Meadows provide excellent opportunities for more detailed study. We can offer a range of activities to assist teachers in fulfilling the requirements for field work opportunities in Key Stage 3, 4 and Post-16 science and geography, including: A-Level Biology - using sampling techniques in fieldwork Based at our Rural Estate hub near the village of Castor, we’ll make use of the range of agricultural and natural habitats within easy walking distance to offer a range of options for practical fieldwork investigations. Designed to meet the requirements for the assessed core practicals of all the major exam boards and specifications, investigation options include: the distribution and abundance of plants the influence of environmental factors on plant species diversity the influence of biotic and abiotic factors into plant morphology the impact of a variety of biotic and abiotic factors on invertebrate diversity and abundance Our team will work with teachers to tailor a practical investigation to meet the requirements of your exam board, with a focus on species that will be easily observable at the time of your visit. Key Stage 3 and 4 Geography - River Landforms Based at our Rural Estate hub near the village of Castor, we’ll make use of the features observable within easy walking distance along the valley of the River Nene to offer an investigation into River landscapes and processes. Students will study features of the River Nene to answer the question “Is this a river in it’s upper, middle or lower course?” Landforms seen will include: Flood plain Levee Meander Oxbow lake River cliff Students will also have an opportunity to carryout fieldwork to calculate the flow of the river, as well as practicing geographical skills, including interpreting maps and field sketching.
